 To Daughters of the Spirit,

As a new Christian 30 years ago, I had a longing in my heart for a grandmother. My grandparents had all passed when I was young and I wanted a grandmother-granddaughter relationship. I would see other young women out to lunch chatting with their grandmothers and I wanted that too. Little did I know at the time that The Lord put that desire in my heart.

Some time later, I was introduced to one of God’s Saints during a very difficult time in my life. My friend introduced me to her Mother because she quickly seen that I needed prayer and needed someone to take me under their wing. I needed help. I can’t thank God enough for this introduction. My friend’s Mother quickly became my “Momaw Groves.” I loved her and she loved me. For 24 years, Momaw covered me in prayer, ministered to me, corrected me, encouraged me, and supported me. She became my Spiritual Mother. She prophesied to me and declared God’s Word over my life. She kept herself up to date on my family matters, covering them all in prayer. She gave me wise council and took me under her wing. Momaw helped me grow into the woman of God I am today.

When she passed a few years ago, it was heart breaking. I truly loved her. My friendship with Momaw’s daughter continued on as before, but we became closer. I say that because we committed to carrying on the legacy of prayer that Momaw left us with. My friend, like her Mother, prayed for me, encouraged me, supported me, and covered my family in prayer. Likewise, I did the same. What a priceless treasure The Lord gave me when He divinely knitted our friendship together.

When my long time friend of 27 years passed away, again I was heart broken. But this time the grieving was different. I felt as though I was grieving my Momaw Groves again. I soon realized that I was grieving the loss of a “covering.” I love my friend and will miss her. I will miss her as my prayer partner too. She was an important part of my life. Yet, I knew there was something happening in my heart that I needed help with.

Eventually, I reached out to a precious Saint I know (a grandmother) and shared my grieving with her. She immediately prayed for me and shared this word. “The Lord says to tell you that you are covered in more ways than you can ever imagine.”
This wise Saint explained to me that when my Spiritual Mother and her daughter (my friend) covered me in prayer, that it was God covering me! For His words are eternal! When they prayed by the Spirit, they prayed everlasting prayers that still cover me today! They are not gone. Those words still live! It was God that covered me under His wing all along!

I share this to testify of the value of having a Spiritual Mother/Father in your life. Their prayers will cover you your entire life. They are so important.

Apostle Paul was Timothy’s Spiritual Father for the scripture says that Paul called him son. “To Timothy, a true son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord.” (1 Timothy 1:2 NKJV) Timothy needed Paul and Paul was there for him to encourage him in faith.

The book of Ruth teaches us that Ruth came under Naomi’s guidance. “But Ruth said, Entreat me not to leave you, Or to turn back from following after you; For wherever you go, I will go; And wherever you lodge, I will lodge; Your people shall be my people, And your God, my God.” (Ruth 1:16 NKJV) Naomi’s God became Ruth’s God! It was through the lineage of Ruth that Jesus was born.

My favorite example of Spiritual Mothering in scripture is Mary the Mother of Jesus. “When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.”
(John 19:26-27 NKJV)
Jesus, hanging on His cross, gave His Mother to His friend and gave His friend to His Mother. If Jesus found it so important, should we not feel the same?

Let me encourage you to open your heart to Jesus. Ask Him to give you a desire for a Spiritual Mother/Father if you do not have it. Little did I know that over 30 years ago, The Lord would divinely place 2 precious Saints in my life that I would so desperately need. Let me encourage you ‘older and wiser’ Saints. Ask The Lord to send you someone that you can pour your wisdom into and help them to grow into spiritual maturity.

Grandmothers and Grandfathers: YOU ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED IN THIS HOUR. YOUR SEASON OF INFLUENCE IS NOT OVER, BUT YOU ARE NEEDED NOW MORE THAN EVER!

I want to say to the precious (Grandmother) Saint that spoke into my life. Thank you kindly for your years of Faithfulness to The Lord. Your wisdom and prayers bless me.

Father, I pray blessings over your people. I am asking for blessings that flow through a thousand generations. That you would look upon their families and their needs and supply all that is needed. For those that do not have a Spiritual covering, I call forth that Mother or Father of the Spirit into your life, in Jesus name!

I pray that your Saints would think upon the generation behind them and willingly cover them in prayer as you lead them to do so. That they would encourage them, council them, and impart spiritual gifts and wisdom into them. May they hear you call them to raise up the generation behind them into spiritual maturity.

I pray for the reader, that The Lord would bless you and keep you and cause His face to shine on you! May The Lord be gracious to you and give you peace. I declare over you, in Jesus name, that “As the stars are in the heavens may your descendants be in the Lambs Book of Life!”

Amen.
